Garrin
Tuttle
Ravensdale, Washington
Garrin Tuttle, age 24, describes himself
as an aggressive motocross rider. “I like to ride up
things and jump off,” he explains. In March 2006, he
was riding with a group of friends at Belfair State Park,
and they were short
one helmet. “Since I was the most experienced rider
there, I gave him my helmet,” he explains. After lunch,
one of the riders left, and Garrin got his helmet back. Just
moments later, he launched his bike 20 feet in the air over
a rocky spot in the road and landed on his head and pelvis.
He broke his pelvis and wrist and sustained a severe enough
head injury that he was in a coma for four days. The helmet
saved his life. Within minutes, the Mason County Fire EMS
team arrived, and Airlift Northwest was called in to transport
Garrin. Today, Garrin is expected to make a full recovery,
but his life has changed. “I realize I’m not
indestructible.” In fact, Garrin describes himself
as the one in his crowd of friends who’s always saying, “Come
on, dude. Where’s your helmet?”
