Alex
Cesar
Juneau, Alaska
Just before he turned 6, Alex Cesar successfully
fought a case of pneumonia but quickly became ill again with
a high
fever. His doctors in Juneau were concerned about his condition
and called in Airlift Northwest to take Alex, his mom and
his dad to Children’s Hospital. There he was diagnosed
with acute leukemia and was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant.
Finding a donor wasn’t easy. Alex is Tlingit/Filipino
and a registry of mixed-race donors didn’t exist. So
his aunt went to work and recruited more than a thousand
people in Southeast Alaska who were tested and became part
of a national registry. A donor for Alex was found. Today,
according to his mom, Alex is an “amazingly wonderful” boy
who is doing very well. She credits his remission to the
young man who donated his bone marrow. And she thanks the
many people in Southeast Alaska who stepped forward to join
the registry.
