Haines, Alaska
People who live in Haines love its incredible
scenic beauty and its community spirit. They take pride in
their designation as one of America’s “Top 10
Best Outdoor Towns.” Haines is located at the northern
end of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Its remoteness is part
of its charm, but it also presents challenges when someone
needs medical care. According to EMS Training Officer Al Badgley,
the answer is a “chain of care” that includes
a local clinic, the fire department’s EMS team, the
SEARHC air medical service and Airlift Northwest. Badgley
credits an exceptional training program, including classes
from Airlift Northwest nurses, for building an integrated
unit that’s fully equipped to meet a medical emergency.
Haines is one of many communities in southeast Alaska where
our nurses offer training—from basic life support to
the latest techniques in emergency care for adults and children.
“We tailor our classes to the needs of each community,”
says Shelly Deering, Alaska Clinical Director for Airlift
Northwest. “It’s another way we work with our
medical partners so they can better serve their patients.”
According to Badgley, “Lots of people are walking and
talking today in Haines because of Airlift Northwest.”
