Eaglecrest Ski Patrol

Juneau, Alaska

The Eaglecrest Ski Area is a very popular place for Juneau skiers and snowboarders. The area receives about 40,000 visits each winter and boasts both downhill runs and cross-country trails. It also boasts a ski patrol trained and registered as a BLS (basic life support) ambulance service. The idea to provide this advanced training came from Dr. Kenneth Brown, a member of the emergency department at Bartlett Regional Hospital. According to Patrol Director Brian Davies, the training promoted by Dr. Brown helps the team to better assess and provide care to injured skiers. “It’s all about helping people,” he explains. “With this training, we can quickly stabilize a person and start the process of appropriate medical care.” Rick Janik, a Juneau-based flight nurse with Airlift Northwest, praises the dedication of patrol members who have invested time in the advanced training. “They take this assignment seriously,” he says. “And they’ve prepared themselves to give excellent care if someone is hurt.”
