Brent
Emery
Everett, Washington
One Saturday in 2006 when Brent Emery was
3 months old, he looked like he had the flu. By 9 P.M., his
mom and dad decided to take him to the emergency room. By
10 P.M., he was fighting for his life. Brent was diagnosed
with a rare form of liver cancer and the tumor had ruptured,
causing massive internal bleeding. Brent needed surgery and
would have to be transported immediately from Providence Pacific
Hospital in Everett to Seattle Children’s. Airlift Northwest
was called. Over the next few months, Brent endured six different
surgeries, pneumonia, a collapsed lung, kidney dialysis and
transfusions. He had four rounds of chemotherapy and spent
more than 40 days in the ICU. “He’s a determined
little guy,” says his mom Susan. “We think that
really helped him out during his illness.” Today Brent
is an active 3 year old. His favorite game is pestering his
older siblings (John, 11; Robyn, 13; Stephanie, 15). Although
he has some developmental challenges, he knows his ABCs and
spent some time this past summer “helping” his
dad and grandpa build a new deck—he especially liked
the hammering part.
